I first began volunteering massage services while attending The Chicago School of Massage Therapy. I've always felt that volunteering and giving back to the community is one of the best gifts I can give to myself. Upon graduating from CSMT, I've continued offering massage through volunteerism. The following is a brief listing of the organizations and events where I've provided massage.

If you volunteer, I'd like to offer you a $10 discount for your first massage with me. It's my way of saying 'Thank You'. No proof of volunteering is needed; this offer is on an honor-system basis.

I love volunteering. It's a great opportunity to positively impact the lives of people (many never having had massage before) in a compassionate and non-invasive manner has been and continues to be very rewarding.

Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House supports the families with children with a variety of illnesses who are hospitalized at Children's Memorial Hospital by providing residential and non-residential services. They are able to accommodate up to 21 families at one time. As a massage therapist student, and now as a licensed and certified massage therapist, I was and am able to supply tune-ups for parents, grandparents, and other family members. Being there and able to provide at least some stress relief for family members during an extremely stressful time in their lives continues to be a very rewarding experience.

Gay Games VII - Chicago, Illinois

When Chicago was successful in its bid to host the Gay Games VII, I felt it would be a great experience and opportunity to not only support the athletes themselves but also the city of Chicago. As a massage therapist, I knew the effecacy of massage in relation to sports events. I'd volunteered massages for three LaSalle Marathons, but there would be a broader range of athletes. When the call came out for massage therapists to work with the athletes, I jumped at the opportunity. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun and I was able to meet a lot of people from all over the world.

LaSalle Marathon

I originally volunteered massage for the LaSalle Marathon while in school. It was during this first marathon that I realized with hands-on experience the real importance in the relationship between athletes and the benefits of massage. There's theory and then there's real-life practive. Although it was a very long day, I was hooked - both with volunteering for the next marathon but to also learn as much as I could about working with various types of athletes. While I still enjoy working with runners pre- and post-event, I've also worked with bikers, golfers, and swimmers to help them meet their sports goals.

AidsCare

One of the populations with which I wanted to work was those who are HIV positive. I was very fortunate being able to work with AidsCare for a few weeks before their residence available for massage therapy services closed their doors. During that time, I was able to supply relaxation massage for some of their residents. Working with clients who are living with a life-threatening condition was (and is) a humbling learning experience for which I'm very thankful.

With the closing of AidsCare, I decided to continue working with Chicago's HIV positive population by volunteering with Chicago House. As with AidsCare, I was able to provide relaxation massage for some of its residents.

Rush University Medical Center - Childlife Services

Because I believe compassionate and loving touch is physically and psychologically beneficial for all us throughout our lives but even more so for infants, another special population with which I wanted to work was babies and infants. Fortunately for me, Rush University Medical Center allows massage therapists to supply bedside tune-ups for their pediatric patients. In addition, I was able to offer tune-up chair massages for stressed and anxious parents and other family members.
